It all adds up to make a truly remarkable free photo editor that’s superior to many commercial programs. User experience GIMP (short for GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a free alternative to Photoshop that more than holds its own. But don't think that the lack of a price tag means GIMP is lacking in features; it packs enough punch to genuinely rival Adobe's imaging behemoth. GIMP comes with impressive selection and montage features, various ways to retouch your images, cropping, noise reduction and colour adjustment tools, customisable brushes, gradients and so much more. There's plenty for the more advanced user, too, including layer masks, bezier curves, filters and even an animation package. The interface is highly customizable, and the GIMP community has produced a ton of excellent plugins that are all free to download. The program is loaded with tutorials and there's plenty of assistance to be found in the active and helpful community, so don't worry if you get stuck – help is always at hand.
We don't have space to even begin to scratch the surface here, so download GIMP and find out exactly why it's such a popular free alternative to Adobe Photoshop.
For several years, GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) has been one of the best free alternatives to commercial image editors like Photoshop and Corel Draw. It's a free and open-source multiplatform application that lets you do almost the same things you would do on a paid software.
You can use GIMP to edit images and to create new ones. It has a brush, pencil, clone stamp, and an airbrush, among other tools. The features in GIMP are almost identical to those of any other image editor: layers, alpha channels, history, selection tools, transformation, masks, blurring, etc. You can also use GIMP to convert an image format, process files by the batch, create vector images, and edit animated graphics.
This features can be extended with different plugins (there are more than a hundred). GIMP can work with almost every current image format, such as BMP, GIF, JPEG, MNG, PCX, PNG, PSD, PS, PDF, TIFF, TGA, SVG and XPM. Its segmented interface can be particularly useful, since it lets you change the layout of the windows at all times, adjusting them to your preference.
You can also just use the default system, similar to that of Adobe.
